Devices and Mac OS X version
- VLC media player can play almost all the media files, and of course, 3D included, and it is indeed a proven fact. It is an open source program that your PC(Win 10 included)/Mac(El Capitan included) has the power to play movies in 3D.

VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any 64bit Intel-based Mac. Previous devices are supported by older releases.
Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported. Please use version 2.0.10 linked below.
So, I'd seriously consider getting more RAM (you can get a 6 GB kit from OWC (macsales.com).iMovie 10.1 requires 10.10.5 or later which is the most current version of Yosemite. Apparently yours will allow up to 6 GB. Free software for mac. Also remember that older Macs with slower processors and older hardware will not run the latest OS versions as well as a new optimized machine. El Capitan is 10.11.x.
Web browser plugin for Mac OS X
Support for NPAPI plugins was removed from all modern web browsers, so VLC's plugin is no longer maintained. The last version is 3.0.4 and can be found here. It will not receive any further updates.
In my case, after upgrading to El Capitan, VLC crashed unconditionally a couple of seconds after opening any media. It was not a security issue because I have Allow apps downloaded from: anywhere in system settings. Happened both with the latest official version downloaded manually from the videolan.org or via homebrew. The fix was building manually from git according to the instructions at.
